The coupling of a centrifugal pump plays a critical role in transmitting torque between the motor shaft and the pump shaft. Common coupling failures include shaft misalignment, wear, elastic element damage, and loose or broken bolts. To ensure reliable pump operation and prevent secondary damage, troubleshooting should be carried out based on the specific fault type, as outlined below.

1. Common Coupling Failure Types and Solutions

1.1 Shaft Misalignment (Radial or Angular)

Symptoms:

  • Excessive vibration during operation

  • Elevated bearing temperature

  • Abnormal noise from the coupling

  • Long-term operation may lead to bearing or shaft damage

Solutions:

  • Shut down the pump and measure radial runout and angular misalignment using a dial indicator or laser alignment tool.

  • Adjust shim thickness under the motor base to correct levelness and coaxiality.

  • Ensure alignment values are within the limits specified in the equipment manual
    (typically radial misalignment ≤ 0.05 mm, angular misalignment ≤ 0.1°).

  • Tighten motor anchor bolts securely to prevent movement during operation.

1.2 Damage to Elastic Elements (Rubber Pads / Spider Inserts)

Symptoms:

  • “Clicking” or knocking noise during startup or operation

  • Unstable torque transmission

  • Severe cases may cause coupling slippage

Solutions:

  • Replace the elastic element with the same model and material; avoid using non-standard substitutes.

  • Inspect the installation grooves for wear or deformation. Repair or replace the coupling hub if necessary.

  • Control operating load and avoid overload conditions that may cause premature elastic element failure.

1.3 Coupling Body Wear or Cracks

Symptoms:

  • Worn end faces or keyways

  • Cracks accompanied by severe vibration

  • Risk of shaft fracture in extreme cases

Solutions:

  • Keyway wear: Repair by welding and re-machining, or replace the coupling. Replace worn keys simultaneously.

  • Cracks detected: Welding repair is strictly prohibited. Replace the coupling immediately to prevent catastrophic failure.

1.4 Loose or Broken Connecting Bolts

Symptoms:

  • Increased vibration when bolts are loose

  • Transmission failure and pump idle rotation if bolts break

Solutions:

  • Loose bolts: Tighten bolts crosswise to the specified torque. Use anti-loosening measures such as spring washers or lock nuts.

  • Broken bolts: Replace with high-strength bolts of the specified grade and material. Never use ordinary bolts as substitutes.

  • Investigate root causes such as misalignment or overload and eliminate them accordingly.

2. General Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Shutdown and Power Isolation
    Stop the pump completely, disconnect the power supply, and apply lockout/tagout procedures.

  2. Fault Diagnosis
    Identify the failure type through visual inspection and measurement tools such as dial indicators and calipers.

  3. Disassembly and Repair
    Remove the coupling guard, bolts, and elastic elements in sequence. Perform alignment correction, replacement, or repair as required.

  4. Reassembly and Alignment Check
    Re-check shaft alignment after assembly. Ensure smooth rotation without binding and fully tighten all fasteners.

  5. Test Run
    Start the pump and monitor vibration, noise, and temperature. Put the pump back into service only after confirming stable operation.

3. Preventive Maintenance Recommendations

  • Regular Inspection:
    Periodically check bolt tightness, elastic element aging, vibration levels, and bearing temperature.

  • Proper Installation:
    Always perform precise shaft alignment after new installation or maintenance to avoid hidden misalignment issues.

  • Operating Condition Control:
    Prevent long-term operation under overload or cavitation conditions to reduce impact loads on the coupling.

  • Spare Parts Management:
    Keep spare couplings, elastic elements, and bolts of the same model in stock to minimize downtime during failures.
